How to choose a detailer or valeter in Chelmsford

Studio, mobile, or hand car wash

Chelmsford has all three types of business, and they suit different jobs.

  • Fixed studios take the car off the road for a few hours or days: New Again Auto Reconditioning on New Street has traded since 1987 and runs paint correction and ceramic coating in several brands; Autoart Detailing on Pools Lane between Writtle and Highwood is IDA-accredited and was named CarPro New Installer of the Year for 2023 to 2024; Joyce Design on the Widford estate is a 3M Expert Approved PPF installer; and Lusso Auto Care on Hanbury Road is a bodyshop and restoration specialist for supercars and classics, with correction, coating, PPF and secure storage under one roof.
  • Mobile valeters come to your driveway or workplace: Car Valeting Chelmsford, DrX Detailing Lab, Splash 'n' Go, Madness Detailing, Auto-Genie, iValet UK, Gold Crown Car Valet and O.G Valeting all work this way. It costs you less time, but the operator needs a power socket, and sometimes water, at the location.
  • Hand car wash suits a regular clean rather than correction work: Essex car wash and Valeting Centre on Robjohns Road is open every day from eight to six with no appointment needed.

What the accreditations mean

Several Chelmsford businesses list trade accreditations. None is a legal requirement to detail a car, but each shows a level of training and, for coatings and film, a route back to the brand if the work fails.

  • IDA (International Detailing Alliance): Autoart Detailing holds this accreditation.
  • CarPro accredited installer: also Autoart, named CarPro New Installer of the Year 2023/24.
  • Gtechniq: New Again applies Gtechniq alongside Matrix and SiRamik coatings; DrX Detailing Lab's owner completed Gtechniq's correction and coating course; Joyce Design fits Gtechniq five-year coatings.
  • 3M Expert Approved: Joyce Design's paint protection film installation.
  • RMI Trust My Garage: New Again is a member of this consumer-protection scheme.

Questions worth asking before you book

  • Fixed premises or mobile, and if mobile, do they bring their own water and power, or do they need yours?
  • Is the quote for a wash and protect, or does it include machine paint correction first? Correction takes longer and costs more, and a coating over unclipped swirls will not look any better than the paint underneath.
  • Which coating or film brand, and what is the manufacturer's warranty period?
  • For paint protection film: which panels does an 'essential' versus a 'premium' package cover, and is the film self-healing?
  • For a supercar, classic or high-value car: is the business insured for the vehicle's value, and do they offer storage if the car will not be used for a while?
